If you are looking for somewhere trendy and fashionable Lisbon is the place to be. The city’s cutting-edge fashion and design are an enticement for visitors who are after more than a souvenir magnet, or “I love” T-shirt.
To experience contemporary Lisbon you don’t have to venture far, just go to Principe Real, Chiado, Bairro Alto and Baixa, and in its tree-lined or cobblestoned streets you will find numerous fashion shops, design ateliers and art galleries.
Lisbon’s trendiest districts:
Chiado – Take a stroll along the historical streets of this elegant shopping district, stopping for a cup of coffee with the statue of Fernando Pessoa, Portugal’s great Modernist poet. You can also shop at Armazens do Chiado a department store that burned down, together with much of the neighborhood, in 1988, and reopened in 1999 as a shopping mall.
Avenida da Liberdade – This grand avenue, built between 1879 and 1886 and modeled after the boulevards of Paris, starts in Marquês de Pombal and it ends in Restauradores. It features many statues and water features in amongst the shady trees. It’s a street full of hotels, theaters and esplanades, where you’ll find the most expensive brands: Prada, Calvin Klein, Timberland, Massimo Dutti, Armani, Burberrys e Adolfo Dominguez. Even if you don’t want to shop this is a beautiful street, full of life and interesting to walk around and appreciate a less touristy Lisbon.
Príncipe Real – Although it was once only known for its antique shops and gay bars, this attractive neighborhood (named “Royal Prince” in honor of Queen Maria II’s first born) has become the most interesting shopping quarter, down one long street. There are galleries, independent boutiques and design shops for the city’s hippest crowds, as well as the most beautiful and appealing shopping gallery in a palace from the 1800s called Embaixada. Nowadays it is a hip shopping district and the best place to shop for design items and clothing.
