The city of Montijo is strongly marked by the River. In the 16th century, the city had a major development; several workers from all over the country came to Montijo to participate in the works that aimed to make the river navigable, bucking the trend of silting up. This labor had a strong influence in the town and in developing the local economy, which until then depended exclusively on the fishing activity.
Featuring several touristic points, like the bullfighting arena, the Casa Mora garden, the Ribeira de Canha palace and the Esteval’s Windmill, Montijo is also proud of its local residential and religious glazed tiles. In the western area, the riverfront stands out, with its privileged view over Lisbon and the Tagus River, and its rich and diverse bird life. The City’s Museum promotes river cruises, in two typical boats: “Deolinda Maria” and “Lubélia Maria”.
With a rich gastronomy based on Ribatejo’s region, some delicacies can be quite delightful, such as: fishermen´s stew the local roasted loin, the sweet “aldeanos” , the “queijadinhas de Montijo” a milk pastries and the regional wines like “Pegões” and “St. Isidro de Pegões”.
